Frequently Asked Questions

Your first session (also called an intake) is the time when you and your therapist can get to know one another. This is your time to share your struggles in your own words, elaborate on questions asked in the intake questionnaire, and ask us questions of your own. There is no structured format for a session, each is tailored to your individual needs.
Some clients become tearful in their first session. Though this can be surprising, it is also completely normal and can be a sign of catharsis (emotional release), trust, or feeling genuinely seen and understood.

While many counselors and psychologists may have an interest in and implementation of social justice concepts in their practice, Social Workers are educated in multiple areas of inequity in our society throughout American history. The social work education includes the in-depth study of various marginalized communities, their challenges, and the systems that created and benefit from those challenges. Social Workers spend countless hours learning the intricacies of racism, misogyny, classism, and discriminatory methods. It is because of this that your Social Worker can help place your emotions and upsets in their proper context, which can be both validating and an integral part of healing and growth.

Scheduling is done on a first come, first serve basis, and flexibility will depend on your therapist's availability. Most clients schedule a recurring session either weekly or bi-weekly. We are happy to check our schedule if something has come up for you, just send your therapist a text or a message through the secure portal.

We have a 24 hour cancellation policy. If you need to cancel your session outside of the 24 hour window before your scheduled session, there is no fee. However if you cancel 24 hours or less before your scheduled session the late-cancellation fee is the same as the cost of the session. We also have a “no-show” fee that is the same as the cost of the session. These fees are necessary because a time commitment is made to you and is held exclusively for you.

Kind Counseling Collective does not work with health insurance providers and operates under a private-pay model. If you would like to use your out-of-network benefits, please communicate directly with your insurance provider for details of your benefits. KCC is happy to provide you with a Superbill that you can submit to your insurance provider to request reimbursement, however KCC and its therapists do not communicate with insurance companies directly.

Most new clients benefit from weekly sessions, as this frequency supports establishing a healthy relationship with your therapist. Weekly sessions provide consistency, accountability, and faciliate growth, implementation of skills, and processing of new information. Biweekly (every-other-week) is also common, particularly when clients need time to practice new skills and approaches. Frequency is chosen based on client needs and comfort.
Sessions spread further apart are typically “maintenance” sessions for clients who are implementing skills. If you aren’t sure of what frequency is right for you, we’d be happy to discuss this with you to help you select what works best for you.

KCC has a 24 hour cancellation policy, meaning if a scheduled session is canceled within 24 hours, clients will incur a late-cancellation fee equal to the cost of the session.
Your therapist is dedicated to exploring any barriers to treatment you may have that can lead to frequent cancellations. While we understand that life can be unpredictable, and emergencies arise, a pattern of repeated cancellations, even with ample notice, affects the practice and scheduling availability for other clients. Because of this, frequent cancellations may lead to standing/recurring session cancellations and limiting clients’ scheduling options to single sessions rather than recurring.
